Election Day 2024: When to Expect the First Results

As Election Day 2024 unfolds, the nation awaits the conclusion of this high-stakes presidential race.

Election Day 2024: When to Expect the First Results

On the minds of many people when will results start to roll in as former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris go head-to-head for the White House. Though an expected winner might not be called until late into the night or even later, there should be some early results coming from various states as their polls close.

In past elections, some states have reported out results within minutes of their polls closing. For instance, in 2020, it took only a few minutes after polls closed for the Associated Press to call Kentucky and Vermont. If that pattern holds this year, the first returns could start coming in as early as 7 p.m. ET. Below are some key states and when to expect their first results, based on when polls in each state close:

  • Earliest Poll Closures by State
  • Indiana: Most areas: polls close at 6 p.m. ET
  • Kentucky: Polls close 6 p.m. ET in most areas
  • Florida: Polls close 7 p.m. ET in most areas
  • Vermont: Polls close 7 p.m. ET
  • Virginia: Polls close 7 p.m. ET
  • South Carolina: Polls close 7 p.m. ET
  • Georgia: Polls close 7 p.m. ET

Watch these states for the earliest signs of election night trends. In states where one candidate leads the other by more than 3%, early results may give a sense of the momentum for the night. Then, as the night wears on, several more states will report. In fact, major updates are expected throughout the night.
